Case Studies

Case Study 1 – Services for victims of Racial Harassment and Anti Social Behaviour

  • Worked with a north London Borough Council, a registered social landlord and the Metropolitan Police to fully understand the needs of victims of anti-social behaviour and racial harassment
  • Conducted semi-structured interviews with victims, of up to one hour in length, talking through with them the period from first reporting of the incident to the present day
  • Assessed all the support provided by police and housing officers to see what could have been managed or handled to the greater satisfaction of the victim
  • Interviews conducted on a rolling basis and results reported every six months
  • The format of the interview allowed us to follow trends in statistics but also gain considerable insight into emotional impacts
  • Changes to the training of officers were implemented as a result of our recommendations
  • Once these changes had been implemented, we saw dramatic changes of around 30% in measures of satisfaction amongst new victims, for example with regard to the sensitivity of the housing officers and in how well victims were kept informed of the progress of their case

Case Study 2 – Living with Parkinson’s Disease

  • Worked with Parkinson’s UK to explore in detail what it is like living with Parkinson’s Disease on a day-to-day basis, either as someone with the condition or as a close relative or carer
  • The largest study of its kind ever conducted in the world, with 14,000 people with direct experience of Parkinson’s Disease taking part in the study
  • Issues such as family life, mobility, exercise, diet, work, relationships were all explored in some depth
  • The results gave much new insight into day-to-day life with the condition and were widely publicised in national television and newspaper media
  • New guidance and support materials have been produced by Parkinson’s UK as a result of the survey
